Ayurvedic tips for cold season

It’s so common for people to complain of runny noses, stubborn coughs and sore throats at this time of year. In my 27 years of studying the human body I can honestly say this is a space where Ayurveda truly shines. You will struggle to fine an over the counter medication or prescriptive drug that gives you the same relief in the way that simple home remedies can. The beauty in using these tips is that you not only support your body there and then but you slowly improve your immunity and decrease chances of getting sick again.

If you are someone who is always getting sick or struggling to fight off infections then the chances are you need more root cause interventions but here are my simple tips for those struggling now.

  1. Ginger juice - grate a 1 inch piece of ginger. Place in a muslin cloth and squeeze into a glass. This fresh juice is amazing to help warm the body and fight off the coughs, colds. To make it soothing add some warm water, honey to taste and a squeeze of lemon juice.

  2. Cardamom - I love this spice. Especially for those dry coughs and sore throats. Tip: grind your cardamom fresh to benefit from the volatile oils and add to teas or dry powder pastes. My favourite combinations include turmeric powder, cinnamon, black pepper and ginger mixed with honey.

  3. Ajwain or Ajamoda - is what you need to clear that blocked nose. Pan fry the seeds and place them in a clean cotton handkerchief or cloth. Make a small bundle and inhale.

I will share more tips in the coming days.

Have you tried these tips, have they helped?
